Compares two blocks of text and marks what was added, removed and changed, line by line, so a difference you are hunting for stops being a game of spot-the-difference.
When you would use it
- Comparing two versions of a config file or a log.
- Checking exactly what an editor or a tool changed in a file.
- Reviewing a block of text someone rewrote.
What it does not tell you
It compares text as text. Two files that mean the same thing but differ in whitespace, key order or line endings will show as different, and that is usually the right answer rather than a fault. Everything is compared in your browser.
